![]() You don’t know exactly what the person in front of your camera is going to do or how they’re going to move, and I like that there’s some unknown. I like people and that’s the main reason. TR: Basically, I tried everything and got rid of the things I didn’t like. What led you to fashion and beauty photography in particular? What is it you love about those? I was always taking photos but I never thought about it leading to a career. There were competitions that you could submit photos at the fair for prizes I think I submitted some film photos and I’m sure they were horrible-I was so young. When I was in fourth or fifth grade he gave me and my sister a film camera and I used it for 4-H. My dad gets super laser-focused on his hobbies, and photography is one of them. TR: There were a lot of influences coming from different places. so I went there.īut what made you pick up the camera in the first place? The School of Visual Arts in New York has one of the only graduate programs for fashion photography in the world, in fact it is the only school that offers a graduate degree in fashion photography in the U.S. I built this portfolio of images and thought, this looks pretty decent-I could do this for a job, I want to do this for a job. But their outfits were a bit basic, so I started finding crazy clothes from Goodwill and then it grew from there, getting hair and makeup, putting a full team together. Tory Rust: I’m from Fargo, North Dakota and I went to undergrad for Strategic Communications in Denver, and when I was in school I would photograph my friends for fun. It was just a huge dance party.” It’s a safe bet that this isn’t the way fashion shoots usually begin, especially one for the Council of Fashion Designers of America, which commissioned Tory to create its Spring Fashion Week campaign last year. “Whenever anyone came on set, the first thing I’d ask was if they could breakdance,” Tory Rust says with a laugh. ![]()
